Richard Sharum: Campesino Cuba

Cuba has been a magnet for photographers for decades, but all too often they focus on Havana and the beguiling vintage American cars lovingly kept running since the onset of the embargo. Sharum, on the other hand, has spent 4 years in the remote, rarely visited, countryside documenting the lives of the Campesinos, the peasant farmers who are the lifeblood of the Cuban agricultural system. His ability to connect with his subjects without inserting himself into the story is evident in all of his photographs and is the hallmark of great documentary photography.

TOBY BINDER AND RORY DOYLE

The Social Documentary Network Presents: The 2019 Zeke Award Winners

Toby Binder - Youth of Belfast With the UK’s Brexit looming, the future of Northern Ireland and the threat of worsening sectarian divisions are once again in the news. These photos cover the common problems affecting young people in Belfast’s Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods. The division between the neighborhoods is still intense, but unemployment, drug abuse, and violence are common denominators on both sides of the wall.

Rory Doyle - Delta Hill Riders It’s estimated that just after the Civil War, one in four cowboys were African American, yet this population has always been drastically underrepresented in popular accounts. This ongoing project sheds light on the overlooked subculture of African American cowboys and cowgirls in the rural Mississippi Delta.

The glass negative collection of Robert Alter.

Glass plate negatives were an important technical development in the photographic process. Glass, as a dimensionally stable and optically neutral material, was the perfect medium for recording an image. From the 1840’s through the 1960’s, glass was the negative support of choice for many professional photographers. Robert Alter has spent the last twenty years scouring auctions, yard sales, and antique stores, amassing a formidable collection. Scanned and digitally printed, this show will highlight some of Alter’s favorites.
